Trip Leader: | Posted by Robert Kohn on Jan 30, 2013 Looking to help the next generation? Our Club’s new Financial Literacy Committee has partnered up with Olympic High School to teach their students financial literacy. We need you to help us. We are going to teach six classes over 12 sessions and are looking for volunteers. We have the books. We have the lesson plans. We have the students. All we need is your time. This isn’t only for those of you in financial professions. We need to teach real life experience and not sophisticated theory. Classes will be taught during period 5 from 12:28 to 1:13pm. Classes are being taught in February and March and we’ll have an orientation on January 31st for lunch at Olympic High. If you are interested, please contact Rob Kohn at [email protected] or (310) 461-1520. | Posted by Nicholas Goehner on Jan 04, 2013 The Future of UCLA as a World Class Research University | Posted by Scott Kunitz By Emily Blair-Charnelle | | Jim pictured above with his wife Sharen at the 2011 District Conference.1946 - 2013 | | Dear Rotarians, It is with great sadness that I have to report to you that our dear friend and District Governor Elect Jim Dyer suffered a massive medical episode the night of Friday, January 11th and has passed away. He was attending a Rotary event when this occurred and his wife Sharen, was notified immediately at home. Please keep DGE Jim and Sharen in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult and sad time. Service information has now been officially confirmed with the family and is as follows. The service will be held graveside outdoors at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica (1847 14th St. Santa Monica, CA 90404) this Friday, January 18th at 12 noon with a 1 pm interment to follow. A public lunch reception will not be held. In lieu of flowers/gifts, please make a donation to The Rotary Foundation in Jim's name. Yours in Rotary, District Governor Lew Bertrand To read more about Jim and his life click the link that says 'more'. | Posted by Judy Neveau on Jan 18, 2013 Dear Fellow Rotarians: Today under the bright sun we gathered to honor and fondly remember our friend and fellow Rotarian Jim Dyer. About two hundred were there to show their respect and bid farewell to Jim and demonstrate their support for Sharen and the family. We already miss him and his incredible energy and passion. He made us want to be better Rotarians. As I said at the memorial service, we have to believe that right now he is sitting with Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, advising him and catching up. In Jim’s memory, we in his home club want to honor him by funding a Shelter Box. Shelter Box was Jim’s passion and he was its Ambassador and spokesperson. (See the video link below to learn more)
Shelter Box Video If you can and would like to participate at any amount, please make out a check to the Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation and put “Dyer Shelter Box” in the memo line. Mail to Rotary Office: PO Box 586, Santa Monica, CA 90406. If you would prefer to have Savi bill you for this, you can email her and make your wishes known. We will aggregate the donations in our foundation and then send one single check to fund the Shelter Box. The deadline to make your contributions is February 1, 2013, two weeks from today. But please don’t wait, do it now. (If you prefer your donation to stay in our own Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation, mark “Dyer Donation to SMRCF” in the memo line.) If you have any questions, please call me or Savi. In Rotary, and in Jim’s memory, Judy President 2012-2013 Rotary Club of Santa Monica |
