It is hard to believe it is already February - where did January go!!!  We are planning our Mentor trip to Santa Fe in February - more girls than ever have signed up to attend. This is a wonderful experience for the mentor girls supported by our local senators and representatives.

In addition, LCWN will be having meetings in new locations for both the Board meetings and the membership meetings.  The Board meetings will now be held at the United Way offices on Shipp Avenue, and the membership meetings will be held in the meeting room of the Hobbs Public Library.  We are grateful to both these venues to be able to accommodate our needs.

I look forward to seeing all members and new members at our next membership meeting on Friday, February 20.

LCWN had a holiday ornament exchange luncheon on December 19th at Pacific Rim.  What a wonderful time all of us had, with over twenty people attending and telling a little something of themselves that LCWN members & friends may not of know about them.  Great food, wonderful friendship and we all went home with beautiful ornaments.

It's the finale of all that dashing around, planning and shopping -- the Christmas dinner.
And if you're the one heading up the December 25th mission control center (AKA your kitchen), I know you want everything to come out perfect.
But there are some things that you definitely don't want to invite to your Christmas table.
And, no, I'm not talking about a Tofurkey, which doesn't even belong in our vocabulary, let alone on anyone's dinner table!

You better watch out...

Hello members,

As you know, we had our annual dinner and I passed the gavel to Rae Cogar. She is our new President starting in December. We had a great evening and Senator Gay Kernan was a wonder speaker for our event.

I have SO enjoyed my time as President of this wonderful organization and am so appreciative of the opportunity. I now turn my attention to being the Past President and helping in any way I can. We have more mentor girls than ever before so I encourage you all to get involved. We have new members that have stepped up to be officers and I am so very grateful to those ladies.

Enjoy this wonderful Holiday time of year and God bless each of you.

Sincerely, Rebecca Long

LCWN Luncheon Guest Speaker: Dr. Marilyn J. Coady, D.C.

Dr. Coady is a Chiropractic Physician and Certified Advanced BioStructural Correction.  A Palmer College of Chiropractic Alumna and Distinguished Fellow of the International Chiropractors Association.

Dr. Coady grew up in Lovington, NM and has been at her current location on the Lovington Hwy thirty-three years.  She explained with her spinal cord Skelton, that our posture is so important to our entire body & health.

Most of our office chairs are not good for us to sit in and she spoke about how our vehicles are also not made to allow us to sit correctly.  She hopes the auto industry will change this.

Our spinal cord is divided into four different regions: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions.  It’s the most important structure between the body and the brain.   If were having problems in one area of our spin, we can cause additional problems with one of the other areas of our spin, because we over compensate with our injury area.  To continue good health, it’s important to have your spinal cord inline at all times.

Health Boosts From a Good Laugh by Madeline Vann, MPH

The benefits of a good laugh are wide-ranging and can include protection from emotional issues like depression and improving the health of your heart. Here's what experts know about the health benefits of laughter:

  • Mental health benefits. Mental health benefits. Although you probably can’t laugh off depression, one of the many benefits of laughter and a sense of humor is that they buffer you against the negatives of life that could lead to depression. As an added bonus, research shows that people who use humor to fight stress also feel less lonely and more positive about themselves. And one recent study found that humor therapy was as effective as widely used antipsychotic drugs — minus the side effects — in managing agitation in patients with dementia.
  • Physical benefits. Although we can’t yet say that a certain number of laughs every day will keep the doctor away, studies show that people who say they laugh a lot also tend to be in good health and generally feel well. Laughter is also one of the most commonly used complementary therapies among cancer patients, who find that one of the benefits of laughter is an improved quality of life.
  • Heart health benefits. Laughter could be healthy for your heart, too. Some research shows that when you laugh, there is an increase in oxygen-rich blood flow in your body, possibly due to the release of endorphins, which create a chemical rush that counters negative feelings and stress. Activities that increase endorphins include a good workout and listening to music you love, and laughter deserves its place on the list with these other stress busters.

Building Laughter Into Your Life

Loving the benefits of laughter but don’t feel like laughing? Sometimes you have to make a conscious effort to laugh. If you’re facing tough times such as a tight budget, work stress, or an illness like cancer, it may help to learn techniques to bring the benefits of laughter into your life. You can try the old stand-by recommendations:

  • Rent a funny movie, read a funny book, or watch a funny sitcom.
  • Spend time with an amusing buddy.
  • Look on the light side: Go places that help you remember good times that have made you laugh in the past.

Or you can join the "laughter movement" to learn about the benefits of laughter while fighting stress:

Lea County Women's Network is a wonderful organization full of ladies who love to Laugh, come check us out and Laugh with us.

Hello Ladies,

We have several wonderful ladies that have answered the call to be Officers for 2015 but we still need a Fundraising Chairman and a volunteer for Guest Relations.

Please make it a priority to attend the membership luncheon this Friday the 17th as we will be voting on these new Officers.

Our annual banquet will be November the 13th at the Hobbs Country Club and we will welcome these new Officers that night. The cost for the banquet will be $35 per person. I believe it will begin at 6:00 pm.

Our speaker for this Friday will be Marilyn Coady of Coady Chiropractic. I know I have several questions for her so please attend and help me welcome her to our wonderful organization.

See you then,

Rebecca Long

The old adage 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' may be a silly rhyme you heard as a kid, but you might be surprised to learn of apples' serious health benefits.

Your mom didn't use the term powerfood but she knew about apples. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" was the first nutritional advice myself and many children heard from their moms. For this reason we call them "the first powerfood."

Good afternoon ladies,

I pray you are all enjoying the rain. I know it has caused several cancellations of area events but the moisture is so very needed.

It is time again for nominations for our annual awards. The 2 awards are the Janet Seagrave Lifetime Achievement Award and the Career Achievement Award. Please see the home page of the LCWN website for an explanation and more information. We award theses at our annual banquet in November. Please give this some thought and fill out a nomination form and get this to Charlotte Smith. The deadline is October 15th.

I am so proud of the hard work our members have done this year. We have awarded more scholarships than ever and in doing so have empowered more young women to achieve their goals.

This month will be our Professional Development program so I hope you will all make a point to attend the luncheon this Friday.

I look forward to seeing you all.

In order to have a substantive newsletter each month, we REALLY need all of you to help contribute articles, information, tidbits, poems, etc. You'll notice that this month is very lean.  With the Back to School period upon us, perhaps that reflects that we all are very busy getting our offspring off to school?!  At any rate, come September, please help us out by sharing information that professional and business women will gain from as well as all of us in our personal female lives.  You can go into the bulletin on your own, enter your information, and Charlotte and I will take it from there!

Thanks for all that you do for Lea County women through this Sisterhood!

The Student Mentor program is about ready to start up again....just as soon as school gets well under way.  Who do you know who is a young lady in high school in Lea County?  If she is a Junior or Senior we would love to have her participate in the LCWN  Mentor Program.  PLEASE give it some thought!  You can help a young lady learn so much about careers and opportunities that she might not be aware of if you can encourage her to join the mentoring program..  Don't  attempt to "sell" the program.  Just provide the contact information to one of us and we will see that they are invited to learn about the program and decide for themselves.

If you have any questions or any names please contact Louise Hudson  575-392-6668, Rae Cogar 575-392-9314 or Belinda Morris 575-392-7179.
