Administrative Committees
Athletics: The Club sponsors and hosts the annual banquet honoring the U of I men's basketball team each April. The Athletic Committee plans and organizes this large community event which was first held in 1922. It also manages the fall "football guessing contest", a friendly competition between community service clubs.
Crier: The
Crier is the Club's weekly news bulletin. It appears on the Club's Website and is emailed to every member. It reports on all Club meetings (weekly, committee, board), upcoming events (programs, service initiatives, fundraisers), special announcements (members, guests, committees), and items of general Club interest. Committee members serve as weekly editors on a rotating basis.
Endowment: The Endowment Committee assumes responsibility for attracting donations for the Welfare Foundation. It oversees the investment of those funds, and determines which activities and programs are to be funded by the Foundation. The committee administers the Club's "Fellows and Patrons" program, the Vedder Camp Fund, the Shaul Scholarship Fund and the Q. L. Snook Career Education Fund. (The Endowment Fund is separate from the Fundraising Fund)
Finance: The Finance Committee may, with the President-Designate, consider the tentative budget prepared by the Treasurer. It may make recommendations at any time on financial matters to the Treasurer and to the Board of Directors. The Finance Committee reviews all financial reports prepared by the Treasurer. The Treasurer serves as an ex-officio member.
Fundraising: The committee coordinates fund-raising activities of the club for the purpose of securing the funds necessary to meet budget requirements for the Service Committees. This committee works in concert with many of the club committees by assisting them in their individual fundraising endeavors. (The Fundraising Fund is separate from the Endowment Fund)
Growth, Education and Membership: The GEM Committee provides leadership for the recruitment of new club members, leads orientation efforts of new members and carries out activities to cultivate and retain members.
House and Reception: At weekly meetings, members of this committee greet members and guests. They maintain attendance records, collect meal fees and introduce guests to the Club. The committee arranges for club meeting sites, both permanent and temporary.
Interclub: Interclub is all about visiting other Kiwanis Clubs. Designed to develop and maintain close relationships with area clubs, once a month this committee schedules an interclub visitation. Participation is not limited to committee members as all club members are encouraged to share in the experience.
Music: The Music Committee provides music, accompanists and song leaders for weekly meetings. When appropriate, the committee also arranges special music.
Program: Each week, the club hosts a guest speaker. It is the Program Committee that secures the speaker and makes all arrangements for the weekly program. It makes certain all the needs of the speaker are met, selects a member to introduce the guest and follows up with a note of appreciation.
Public Relations: It is the responsibility of the Public Relations Committee to keep the community informed through the media and by other means, the activities, programs and achievements of the club. It also provides newsworthy club information to Kiwanis International and to the I-I District.
Website: The Website is the information center for the Club. The Crier (news bulletin) is published and sent via email to members from the Website. Data about the Club and individual members is available. The Website is interactive where appropriate. Links for Kiwanis International and the I-I District are available.
Club Services Committees
Camp Kiwanis: The Camp Kiwanis Committee works closely with the Girl Scouts. The committee makes recommendations for improvements and coordinates "work days" if normal maintenance and upkeep is needed.
Circle K: This committee serves as the advisor to area college and university Circle K Clubs, including the University of Illinois Circle K Club. They attend meetings, assist with fundraising, coordinate service projects with Kiwanis and encourage Circle K Club members to visit the Kiwanis Club.
Community Service: The CSC is responsible for involving the club in the community. Projects include bell ringing for the Salvation Army, recognizing retiring teachers within the community and organizing the Kiwanis One Day which has included cleaning a portion of Prospect Avenue.
Key Club: This committee serves as the advisor to high school Key Clubs in Champaign-Urbana. They attend meetings, assist with fundraising, coordinate service projects with Kiwanis and encourage Key Club members to visit the Kiwanis Club.
Little League: This committee administers the C-U Little League program. It determines league boundaries; manages C-U Little League funds, buys uniforms for players; registers with Little League International; procures supplemental insurance; supports with individual league administration; administers the Little League website, coordinates Twin-City League Tournament; and plans the annual C-U Little League banquet and awards ceremony.
Spiritual Aims: The Spiritual Aims Committee schedules invocations at weekly club meetings. It may contribute spiritual thoughts to The Crier. It can also act as a clearing body for making contact with ill Kiwanians.
Tom Jones Challenger League: The Challenger League was established in 1999 as a division of the C-U Little League. It is named in honor of long time Kiwanian, the late Tom Jones. It is open for children ages 5-18 who are physically and/or mentally challenged. It is the committees' responsibility to administer, coordinate and plan the activities of the TJCL.
Young Children Priority One and Youth Services: The work of this committee epitomizes the Kiwanis motto, "Serving the Children of the World"; but, concentrates its' efforts to the needs of the children of all ages within our community. Programs include child identification Day in the Park; Spinoza bears for chronically-ill children; Champaign Early Childhood Center, Washington and Swann School partnerships; the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club; book drives for area pre-schools; assisting with the Salvation Army toy shop during the holiday season; and other child-oriented projects. The committee also coordinates the youth recognition program honoring outstanding students from local high schools; plans an annual program honoring outstanding 4-H members; and, on behalf of the Kiwanis Club, budgets and makes donations to area child welfare organizations.
