Reversing the Membership Chill – Membership Development Forum

From the club to the national level there is currently a chilling dilemma in Rotary; membership in the U.S. has steadily and significantly declined for over ten years.  The numbers don’t lie; membership development efforts in most clubs have not and are not working well!  To reverse this we must change the way that we do things, while retaining the core values of Rotary; service above self and doing good in the world. Of those who have, few knew what Rotary is or does. Who can change this?  THIS CAN ONLY CHANGE AT THE CLUB LEVEL!  New at the upcoming Membership Development Forum:

Attention:  All Presidents, Presidents-elect and Assistant Governors!

 
 
Rotary International Leadership Institute is holding the next class  February 7-8 in Waxahachie. This valuable Seminar can help you determine how to maximize your role as Leader of your club or  committee.  For only $250 inclusive (includes materials, Hotel room and Food)  you will have experiences that weekend with fellow Rotarians that give you new skills and insights about your club, your job and your personal life.  We ask that Clubs pay for the tuition if possible - it is an investment in the club’s Future.

2015 Rotary International Convention

The 2015 Rotary International Convention is in Sao Paulo, Brazil June 6-9, 2015.  I  recommend that you start planning now.  I am including Visa application information and forms, RI Convention Hotel information and the 2015 RI Convention registration information forms.  Sao Paulo is going all out to make this an exciting event and on Sunday June 7, 2015 the city will with Rotary International have the annual Carnival Parade and Rotarians will get to participate. There are 134 Carnival Clubs who will be in the parade and the parade rivals the one in Rio.  Remember Sao Paulo is the largest city in the Americas.
 
Howard Rotary Tours and Gate 1 Travel  have prepared tours for Rotarians who want to combine attending the RI Convention with additional sightseeing and vacations.
 
The Houston RI District is negotiating for another “Cowboy Dinner Cruise” and I hope to have more details soon.

Peace Symposium 2015

Calling all Interactors, Rotaractors, and teens in general to come to the Peace Symposium on January 31, 2015, on the SMU Legacy Campus in Plano.  This symposium features keynote speaker, Helen Reisler, who was president of the Rotary Club of New York City when 9/11 happened.  Returning speaker, Jeff Whitfield, a Rotary Peace Scholar, will also address the group.  Breakout sessions on Religious Understanding and Respect, Culture and Conflict, Race Relations, Gender Discrimination and Human Trafficking, How to Deal with Bullies, Disagreeing Without Being Disagreeable, and Politics - The Human Element will get students inspired to return to their communities and become Agents for Peace.  The event starts with Registration at 8:30 and ends at 3 PM.  Lunch is provided.  

We welcome contributions from any Rotarians who would like to sponsor the event.  Contact Judge William Sanderson who will instruct you on how your contribution can be tax deductible.  If you have questions or wish to register students for this event, please email their names and the name of your Rotary Club to Vicki Rowe at [email protected]​.  

Let's start 2015 out right by promoting peace and helping young people learn more about Rotary and its efforts worldwide to foster peace and understanding among nations and individuals.  

 

 
The Addison Rotary Club Presents a Big Check!

THE ADDISON ROTARY CLUB PRESENTS A $200,000 CHECK TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF DALLAS
 
Thursday, October 9, members of The Addison Rotary Club, presented to Ronald McDonald House of Dallas (RMHD) a check in the amount of $200,000—the proceeds from the club’s annual golf outing held yearly since 1990. Now in its 24th year, the Addison Rotary Open (ARO) took place at Gleneagles Country Club on September 8, 2014; approximately 225 golfers made the event a competitive and fun day. Since 2010, The Addison Rotary Club and its foundation, the Addison Rotary Foundation, has raised more than $1 million for the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas and is the charity’s second largest annual fundraiser. 2014 ARO Chair, Lance Pendley says, “The most amazing part of this story is that The Addison Rotary is a relatively small club with about 45 members which means that each member has raised approximately $22,000 over the past 5 years.” Since the operational cost of a night’s stay at RMHD is $125, it is estimated that the ARO has raised funds to pay for over 8,000 nights at the House with the $1 million raised.

Head for the Hills in April for a Fabulous District Conference

This year’s District 5810 Conference will be held April 16 – 19, 2015, at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville, TX.  Kerrville in the spring has much to offer.  Thrill to the beauty of the bluebonnets nestled in the rolling hills, experience the stirrings of spring by venturing out of doors to golf, shoot skeet, bicycle, kayak, or just stroll along nature paths.  This District Conference will have something for everyone in the family.

A New Satellite Club in the District

The Rotary Club of McKinney Sunset wants to be the third Rotary club in McKinney. A satellite club of McKinney Sunrise is now being formed in the city’s historic downtown. The acting Chairs for this new effort are Sandi and Lyle Froese, members of McKinney Sunrise and active participants in District 5810. Getting a new club started is always a work in progress. Rotarians throughout the district are encouraged to assist in this effort by showing up and offering support to the folks who are new to Rotary. 

You can help by putting McKinney Sunset on your makeup list and dropping by these informational and organizational gatherings. This satellite club is a happy hour club that meets each Thursday afternoon at 5:15 PM at Louisiana St. Grill, 350 E. Louisiana St., McKinney, TX 75069. The Grill is two blocks east of the historic downtown square. There is no meal, just a bunch of folks with hearts for service on tabs or having a glass of iced tea, chips and salsa. Join us and encourage others who may be potential members.

Project: A Taste for Dallas Sports
 
In 2006, A Taste for Dallas Sports was formed to celebrate Dallas-Fort Worth sports teams and raise funds and awareness for two service projects. The Rotary Club of Dallas DreamTeam Program's purpose is to mentor and provide scholarships to DISD high school students. To accomplish this goal students are taught to recognize, develop and utilize their leadership, scholarship and service capabilities. The future potential fostered in these students will enrich the lives of countless others, leading to stronger and more cohesive communities. The Dreams for Scholars Endowment will allow us to provide scholarships to deserving students.
The Dallas Trinity Rotary Club focuses on A Bridge to Service with projects such as student scholarships, classroom technological equipment, student school supplies, school supplies, school uniforms, family and child support programs such as CASA and The Well Community, to name just a few. 

 

 
Greenville Rotary Makes Local News
GREENVILLE — Greenville’s Noon Rotary Club has made a big donation toward the effort to purchase new seats for the Greenville Municipal Auditorium (GMA).
 
“We believe in the motto of ‘service above self’,” said President David Weiland as he presented a $5,000 check to the Greenville City Council Tuesday night.

SARASOTA, Fla., April 1, 2014 – As National Volunteer Week, April 6-12, approaches, Bruce Heller, a member of the Rotary Club of Allen Sunrise of Rotary District 5810, has been recognized by President Obama and humanitarian organization, ShelterBox USA with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his efforts in 2013 to assist disaster survivors.

Interesting Observation from Park Cities Networking Happy Hour Last Night
Once a month, Park Cities hosts a networking happy hour at different venues around Dallas and this month we were at the Inwood Theatre Bar.  As we were all mingling, a 35 year old patron asked several of us what we were doing and we told him we were with Park Cities Rotary and that we were having a networking happy hour.  He got a very confused look on his face and said isn’t Rotary a bunch of guys from the 1930’s and 1940’s and not relevant for him.  Several of us talked to him and then another guy who was at the bar and talked about different projects that Rotary had done from Kenya to Nicaragua to Childs Play at Bachman Lake to the 4th of July Parade.  He came across very intrigued and might actually show up to our meeting on Friday.  He was also very impressed by a potential new member of Park Cities who was at the happy hour and was talking about his time spent in Pakistan and Afghanistan giving the polio vaccine to people
 
I am not sure the best way to circumvent the perception that people have of Rotary other than showing them where it is different.

It's an animatronic character that sings and dances and teaches ethics to children.
