Another very beautiful sunny day for our meeting at the club.  Jim Hartman led us in the invocation by AJ Johnson with the Pledge of Allegiance, Eileen Hupp, acapella, with The Patriotic Song.  Carolyn Lehr introduced the guests and Greg O’Brien led the Welcome Song.

Suzy Mentioned that the Governor’s visit will be on September 13th and he will be sending a representative this year.  Julia Parton requested assistance for the Concours on September 15th for help to man the gates.  This is the club’s major community effort for the year.  Greg O’Brien discussed the potential excursions the “Three Amigos” are designing for us.  Please respond to his request to voice your opinion.

We had two wonderful craft talks Friday afternoon and it is always a great opportunity to learn about our fellow Rotarians.

Alan (A.J.) Johnson retired as an Actuary 13 years ago without ever doing an Actuarial Study.  Since then he has done an Actuarial Study which by his definition is determining the likelihood of future contingent events.  His formal education was in Math and Actuarial Science with normally 5-8 years of exams following to become a “Fellow” but he accomplished this distinction in 3 years.

His career was spent at Transamerica Insurance.  He rose through the ranks becoming manager of the Pension Authorial Departments, Asset & Learning Manager, Chief Actuary of Life Insurance Division and Corporate Actuary are among his many responsibilities.  His timing was impeccable and he  rose quite rapidly in the company because he was an actuary (with Personality).  While there he conceived of an IRA that brought prominence to  him  by the Investing Public.

A.J. instructed us on financial wealth and advised us that really it is managing and maximizing net worth that is important.  He presented various financial scenarios and reminded us to include our contingent liabilities e.g. college funding, retirement etc. and  required  cash flows in planning.

A.J. is married and his wife went to U.S.C. and they have an 18 year old son.

Jim Morgan, Wayfarer’s Chapel, Jim grew up on the Peninsula and was one of five siblings and has been a traveler ever since.  He went to high school in Germany starting with a 3 month intensive language school and then took up chemistry (beer & wine chemistry) with his fellow students.  He won a silver medal for Ballroom Dancing in Germany.  Ultimately he came back to the U.S. for a bit and went to college at U.C.S.B.  He went back to Germany every year between classes and then went to grad school in Berlin.  This was at the time during the Cold War and he had many tales to tell.  After that he spent 2 years in Japan and came back through Beijing, by rail to Moscow (2 week trip) and then onto Rio (stay up, party all night and sleep on the beach during the day).  Other travels included Istanbul, Rumania, India Nepal and others too numerous to mention.  He earned money by being a U.S.A. Army cook plus other miscellaneous jobs around the world.
He worked for the YMCA for 25 years of his career.  Jim is married and his wife is from Long Beach and they have 2 sons, 18 and 20.  One is in premed at U.C.S.D. and the other is studying Mechanical Engineering at C.S.F.  They love to go camping and have done so far the last 15 years up at Rock Creek in the Sierra’s.  Jim still cooks and loves his fried chicken  with potatoes,  gravy recipe.
