Many a man’s outlook is different after he becomes a Rotarian.

He learns to see opportunities for service at home and abroad.”

Founder Paul P. Harris, Address to 1930 RI Convention

February 1, 2013

Dear Rotarians:

The month of February is designated World Understanding month by Rotary International.  It also happens to be the month that includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on February 23, 1905.  Rotary International promotes world understanding through Rotary’s Fourth Object:

     “The advancement of International Understanding,

good will, and peace through a world fellowship

of business and professional persons united in

      the ideal of service.”

How can a Rotary Club in the Hudson Valley address the topic of World Understanding?  There are many opportunities in our District to address this theme of World Understanding.

At a recent Youth Exchange Weekend in Phoenicia, I observed our fabulous group of In-bound exchange students from around the world.  We have Rotary World Ambassadors in our District from Brazil, Turkey, France, Belgium, Thailand, Taiwan and Austria.  They are all well spoken and love to talk about their homeland.  In fact, they are expected to visit other Clubs and talk about this Country.  They are all enthusiastic, spirited and love life.  I encourage all of you to invite a Youth Exchange student to your Club as a speaker.

You could also plan programs involving former GSE Team members.  Many of our GSE alumni have not joined Rotary, but still have a soft spot in their hearts for Rotary.  You might want to arrange discussions on World Topics that are important to all of us.  You could present entertainment with an International cultural or artistic theme, or plan other programs with an International emphasis.

Many Clubs take the opportunity to launch an International Community Service activity or make contact with a Rotary Club in another country.  It is a good month to initiate a Rotary Friendship Exchange, 3-H Project or encourage support for Polio Plus and other Rotary Foundation Programs.

Would you like to do something special in honor of Rotary and its birthday?  Make a contribution to a project, local or international.  Give of your time, your treasure, and your commitment to bettering the world.  World Understanding, an opportunity for all Rotarians.

Thank you for all you do for Rotary.

PS – Speaking of World Understanding, I hope you all read the cover story in the February Rotarian.  It is about an amazing young woman who lost her arm in Sierra Leone.  Well worth your time.

Doug is having Rotarians ring the bells to "When the Saints go marching in" and "Ode to Joy"

Doug Sturomski came to the West Point-Highland Falls Rotary Club meeting this morning to talk with us about peace and about the World Wide Peace Bell Foundation. Doug’s presentation, which included pictures of all kinds of bells, was very informative and a lot of fun. Our members really enjoyed Doug and his message of peace.

Vassar College Rotaract Club and the Hati Project - Reforestation and Water Initiatives

Haiti faces major challenges in public health. Lack of access to water, particularly clean water, both inconveniences Haitians and puts them at risk for disease. The Vassar Haiti Project is a 501(c)(3)-compliant nonprofit organization that works with people in the rural village of Chermaitre, Haiti on education, health, reforestation, and clean water initiatives.  To accomplish our goals, we sell Haitian art and craftworks at sales throughout the year. In 2011, our Water Initiative built four cisterns that collect water for the village of Chermaitre. This system, centered at the village school services about one-third of Chermaitre's five hundred residents, but there is still a need for greater capacity.  Furthermore, the cisterns are unfiltered, raising the risk of waterborne illness. We seek to install communal biosand filters to provide clean water in Chermaitre. We would also like to expand our system of piping to deliver water to more of the village. We are partnering with Rotary clubs in District 7210 to achieve these goals. We are also partnering with Vassar College’s Rotoract Club, which is supporting water filtration in Chermaitre as their international service project. We welcome partnerships with any groups interested in improving the health of the people of Chermaitre. Please visit our website http://thehaitiproject.org or email us at [email protected] to learn more.                                                                                                   by Roger Risko

Dear Rotarians:

Season's Greetings!  It's hard to believe that we're nearly halfway through our 2012-13 Rotary year.

As we endeavor to carry out President Sakuji Tanaka's vision of "Peace Through Service", I'm reminded that the majority of clubs have overlooked an important opportunity to promote global peace, international understanding and good will this year.

What could it be?

I'm referring, of course, to our Youth Exchange Program that enables your club to send a young ambassador abroad and/or accept an inbound student who comes to your community, lives with local families and attends your local high school, putting a friendly face on a foreign country that becomes less foreign to all who interact with these young ambassadors.

This year we have six outbound students in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, France, Taiwan and Thailand, and seven inbound students from those six countries and Turkey, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Greenville, Highland, Millbrook, New Paltz, Phoenicia, Red Hook and the Arlington High School consortium of LaGrange Sunrise, Pleasant Valley and Poughkeepsie-Arlington.

We are currently interviewing ten applicants to go abroad in 2013-14.  We're thrilled to have this many students eager to spread good will on behalf of the Hudson Valley and Rotary, but if we are to fulfill the dream of a Rotary Youth Exchange experience for all of them, we need additional clubs to host  an inbound student to facilitate the "exchange".  Why not yours?

For further information or a YEX presentation at your club, contact District YEX Chair David Greenwood at 845-677-5767 or [email protected].  It's my hope that more clubs in District 7210 will take advantage of this program to promote peace through service in your club, your local high school and your community.

Happy New Year,

William J. Bassett
