Rotarians and student volunteers served up a variety of pancakes with sausage. Raffle drawing every half hour for prizes galore added excitement. Interact Club representatives recently updated local Rotarians on the activities and donations made by the Warwick Valley High School student organization.

L to R: Rotary President Neil Sinclair, Interact Advisor Jeaanine Fogler, Interact Club Vice President Tristen Protzmann and Interact President Franklin Helmen.

WARWICK -- Warwick Valley High School's Interact Club, with a membership of about 100, is the largest student organization at the high school. And those students are having an important impact on the local community and beyond. Among recent projects, the Warwick students raised 4,000 items during a food drive, sent shoeboxes and gifts to soldiers in Afghanistan and children in foreign countries, supplied meals for 25 families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, helped senior citizens at Mount Alverno, collected Christmas toys for needy children and donated $1,000 to Rotary’s community service programs.

WVHS's Interact Club has been presented the prestigious Rotary International Presidential Award, recognizing it as one of the top Interact clubs in the world.

Warwick Interact members have raised more than $35,000 over the past 10 years with fundraising projects. Largest of these fundraising activities is the annual spring student talent show. All money raised is used for charity.

Although sponsored by Rotary's local service club, Interact operates independently under the guidance of Jeanine Fogler, who has been advisor of the club for 11 years. Rotary Vice President Ed Lynch serves as coordinator between the two clubs.

Dear Rotary District 7210 Club Presidents and Fellow Rotarians,

Today has been declared “Giving Tuesday”, so we’re choosing this day to give each of you an update on the status of the ShelterBox disaster relief efforts in the Philippines and to remind you that, if you have not already done so, Rotary International President Ron Burton has personally sponsored a ShelterBox to help a family in need and is encouraging you and/or your Rotary Club to do the same if at all possible.

ShelterBox now has Response Teams operating across seven of the Philippine’s very isolated islands, providing vital humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable families in those extremely remote areas.  We have increased our commitment to providing our teams for at least three months and to providing enough aid to help 6,000 families.  View the latest news on the ShelterBoxUSA website at: http://www.shelterboxusa.org/about.php?page=112

District 7210’s Rotarians and Clubs have also responded to this disaster in a significant way, committing to a total of at least $15,000 of support thus far.  Donations ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars have come from over fifteen of the District’s Clubs, including New City, Rhinebeck, Middletown, Patterson, Warwick Valley, Patterson, Poughkeepsie-Arlington, Carmel, Red Hook, Spring Valley, Millbrook, Goshen, Kinderhook, Hyde Park, Liberty, and others.  Numerous individuals have also donated generously to this important cause via our secure District 7210 ShelterBox Supporters Fundraising Page (see below).

There are many ways that you can immediately join RI President Ron Burton and your fellow District 7210 Rotarians in helping ShelterBox to provide disaster relief to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines:

Dear Rotary District 7210 Club Presidents and Fellow Rotarians,

My friends, the people of the Philippines need our help, TODAY!

You’ve seen the devastating news reports daily since Super Typhoon Haiyan roared, with winds of 195 mph, onto the Philippine coast on November 7.  With more than 10,000 people feared dead, and thousands more left homeless, recovery will take a worldwide effort on the part of all caring people.

ShelterBox already had teams working in the Philippines as the typhoon arrived, responding to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Bohol on October 15, and new ShelterBox Response Teams and truckloads of ShelterBoxes have arrived there since the typhoon struck.  Our teams are currently focusing their efforts in Tacloban, Cebu and Bohol, and we have committed immediate aid for 4,000 families in the Philippines.

Your financial assistance is imperative to our ability to meet this significant commitment.

ShelterBox has also been busy elsewhere in the world providing shelter, warmth and dignity to the survivors of numerous other disasters this year, including in India, Sudan, Pakistan, Uganda, Australia & Mozambique due to flooding, Madagascar, Fiji & Samoa for Cyclones, North Korea due to Typhoons, Pakistan and Solomon Islands for earthquakes, Syria, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan & Myanmar due to conflict, and of course here at home in New York and New Jersey for hurricane Sandy relief, and in Oklahoma in response to the recent tornados there. Please visit www.ShelterBoxUSA.org/news to read recent stories from these deployments around the globe.

Please contact us immediately to support ShelterBox and our assistance for families in need, to become a ShelterBox Hero, or if you wish to schedule a presentation at an upcoming meeting, arrange for a ShelterBox tent display at an event, or if there’s any other way that we can assist you.   You can even donate via our secure Rotary District 7210 ShelterBox Supporters fundraising page (also accessible from our District website and Facebook pages):

=====================================================

Good Evening,

It is in times like we are currently in when Rotary International and Rotarians like us step up and show the world there are people and groups out there that care and want to help.  Our brothers and sisters in the Philippines have been devastated by the recent storms and they need our assistance.  Rotary is not an immediate disaster relief organization as there are organizations that do it better than us.  One of those organizations is ShelterBox USA which is a partner of Rotary International and serves as the boots on the ground when a disaster like this occurs.  I implore you to work with your clubs and sponsor a Shelter Box.  If we all come together and make a commitment we can help those in need.

Drew Kessler, District Governor

Rotary District 7210

Hi friends:

Many of you have been sending your kind thoughts and support for our Philippine Disaster Relief efforts. As of today you have generously donated almost $20,000. which will be matched by Canada government. Thanks for opening your hearts to share.  I just wanted to update you on things there, which seem to be getting worse each day.

Yesterday we communicated with a friend who is out in a remote devastated area, but no help has come yet.  She reported how people are frantic and have now reverted to looting and fighting over the few resources of food and water they have remaining.  We understand that our Rotary friends have flown there in a military plane today to try and coordinate aid to them.

Other reports suggest many will be without utilities and hydro for at least one month.  And due to the earthquake three weeks ago, many buildings cannot be used until engineers confirm their structural integrity.  Image your hospital ward, set up on the street after hospital evacuation.  Or image filing court documents in a tent on the front lawn of our courthouse.

United Nations Announcement

The UN just announced this morning a $25 million allocation toward disaster relief efforts in the Philippines.

You can see an aerial view of the devastation here:

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/media/2013/11/12/vastness-devastation-tacloban-city-313387

I am attaching a flyer we have developed to share and explain our Rotary disaster relief fund, including online contributions by clicking here.  Then choose Disaster fund in the drop down menu.  Please share the flyer to your friends or other groups as appropriate.  All donations will qualify for the Canada gov’t matching.

For your interest I will also attach a first report received from our Rotary friends in the Philippines.  They are working night and day to assist those in desperate need.  The navy and military are cooperating to assist in transporting goods.

Here is a link to CTV news coverage:

FYI, PDG Ian Ferguson also has plans underway for a District 7080 fundraising initiative, hopefully to include DDF and Rotary Foundation assistance.

With thanks for your support and prayers for these desperate people, many of whom we will never know.
